Starter or Solenoid, how to test

Sorry i just went back and looked at what year your truck was. I am including 4 pics. You probably have the starter with the small hump. Mine is the one with the round solenoid attatched to the top of the starter. Im not familiar with the starter that doesnt have a solenoid attatched. I would have to take it apart and check it out.
PS I just went and read your entire thread. I guess we didnt have the same problem. is your starter cranking and starting the motor now? does it still not shut off when you turn the key off? The terrible noise you are describing sounds kinda like a flywheel problem. may be bent, loose. Possibly broken piece in there flying around. did your old starter have any shim plates between it and the tranny?

Great pics. Mine is the one with the hump (bottom Right). My fender solenoid it like the upper left, but with only one "silver" screw for the ingnition switch. I took the replacement off and put the Motorcraft one back on,.....then I found out that I did miss a wire. There was a single wire that I forgot to attach (basically I didn't see it). So maybe the replacement solenoid is still good, I will keep it. Nonetheless, at least the truck turns off when the key is removed. It turns over on first turn, but it is still making the noises as I mentioned before. It doesn't sound like anything is "broken", just a rusty spinning noise (with a slight whistle), like something isn't lubricated. But there isn't anything to lubricate, is there? I was told there are shims that could be placed when installing the starter, but I didn't remove any when I replaced mine, or else they were stuck to the starter and I didn't notice it. The removed starter looked rather old but I really don't know if there were shims. There weren't any on the plate neither did any fall off, otherwise I would have been hit by them!! I thought of a broken fly wheel, but it still seems unlikely. I engaged the gears and move it about 10 feet one way and back. I am afraid to move it any further. What type of damage can be caused if it is a matter or shimmying, or maybe a small chip somewhere in that area?

I wish I could help more, but it's hard to diagnose a noise I can't hear. If you think it's coming from the starter then remove it and inspect the teeth on the starter gear, and also inspect the teeth on the flywheel. You'll have to turn the motor by hand so you can inspect all the teeth. When I say by hand I mean a socket on the crankshaft pulley. Starters sometimes need shimming, but I haven't had to shim one in a long time. I haven't seen any shims on Fords, but Chevies are more common to need shimming.

Yeah Kool. I talked with a mechanic and he mentioned the shims because he thought I had a Chevy. Like I said, I didn't see any. I will just have to get it to a shop and let them check it out. Thanks guys (and girls if any commented).

Found the problem, cheap remanufactured starter from O'reilly's. I bought one from AutoZone and it started right on up, with no funky noises. Now I can proceed to have it inspected so I can drive the thing leagally.
