How would a '91 4.9L manual be as a daily driver?

I'll agree with everyone, the straight 6 is a reliable motor and will serve you well. I'm in the market for one myself to do the same thing you are. Technology has gotten out of control, so I wanna get a simple truck.

From what I have read around the forum, it sounds like the e-fan swap will play a critical role in consistently getting to your target MPG.

I wish mine had a 5 speed and 3.55 or 3.73s. Mines a 95 with the E4OD automatic with 3.08s... It drives fine but struggles on mileage. Here in the hills of Arkansas I consistently get around 12 mpg

That truck would make a great daily driver. IMO, the 300 was the best motor ever made by Ford.
I bought manuals until everyone stopped offering them in new 1/2 tons. But that's probably just because I'm cheap.

Now, I drive about 50-80 miles per day in and around Detroit - lots and lots of stops/starts and horrible, torrential road conditions up here in the north. I feel every little bump, and of course, every foot-deep pothole. The roads are much smoother in Tennessee.
Bottom line: if you have relatively smooth roads, and little city traffic, that truck will make a great daily driver.

BTW: If you don't want it, let me know who is selling it!!
Our roads aren't bad at all, plus my commute is very rural. I pass three traffic lights over the 50 or so miles.

I think this one is a 3.08 also, we have a local shop who does regears very reasonably. I wouldn't be opposed to changing gears. Did all these trucks have the 8.8 rear?

Only mods were K & N filter, hotter coil, and dual e-fans. This is my first F-150 after having a couple of smaller trucks, and I really like the ride. Plus I really like having a bit of metal around me while I'm on those highways!
18-19 would work very well for me. Thanks for the info!

I'll read up on that, plus the other items you mentioned. I appreciate it.

Sorry I haven't updated on this, I had something come up and wasn't able to make the trip last Monday, but am going this Monday to take a look. I'm pretty sure the truck will be coming home with me barring any surprises.

I was able to get a little more history and info on it too. It's a one owner truck with full service records. The biggest negatives I see are the 2.73 gears and non functional AC.

On a rural commute you might not mind the 2:73's at all. Really long legs on the girl.
Wouldn't work great in city traffic but out in the country, once it's rolling, it'll just keep on rolling (pretty much idling along at 55 mph).
And if the only other problem is the A/C doesn't work - just get it fixed.

I do a small amount of towing and my daily commute is over a mountain, but I plan to give the airplane gears a fair chance. The 8.8 rear axle is a popular swap for Jeeps (have one in mine already) so used factory 3.55 ring and pinion sets are plentiful and cheap around here, I'll likely go that route if it it doesn't work out. I have a good set of 4.10s coming out of my Jeep, but I know that's too much gear for what I want to do with the truck.

Update: The deal on this truck never happened, there were a few undisclosed issues but I still made the guy a very fair offer.

I picked up this 2002 5.4 truck with 81k for just a few hundred more than the "best price" I was offered on the 1991 truck.
