Lightbulb Building an engine, stick with 302 EFI or stroke it and carb it

I'm in the brainstorming process of building a engine, should I rebuild the 302 efi engine and try to beef it up to put the truck back stock or stroke the project engine and carb it?

What are you planning to use it for? What requirements do you have? How much is your budget?

Default All purpose

It will be an all purpose engine with a power band around 1200 to 5500 rpm I do quite a bit of off roading but I still like to drive my truck to work I have street tires on one set of wheels for my primaries and a set of super swamper thornbirds for the trails. I want to build one to have enough power to pull and go mudding but still keep the streetability of the stock EFI

Smog testing is obviously not an issue.

What year is your truck? Do you have a MAF? have you considered upgrading to a 5.8?
Whatever you choose keep it EFI.

Removing the fuel injection is a downgrade, and it won't pass emissions inspections.

Its a 89 model and No I have no MAF but going with a 351 EFI it still is computer controlled and if you stroke it or put an aggressive cam in it you would have to re flash or re program the main engine computer and the engine I had in another f150 was a stroker 347 carbed and it ran great. It was more of a hot rod than a functional " truck". I am looking for an economical solution for fair gas milage power and low end torque for off roading.

Good luck w/ that. It's easier to get em to do a coulpe things well. Impossible to get universal perfection. alot of your desires are also subjective (the ceiling is another' s floor argument). Some people are happy w/ 14mpg. If my 87'302 got that kind of mileage, I'd be ravingly pissed off. (unless I was only carbureted)

Well by economical soulution I mean I want an engine that will put out enough power to pull up the trails with ease but still able to open up on the street. If I could get 10mpg I would be happy with a built engine. I just need a good idea to start with. What kind of engine should I build for an all terain application. 302, 347, 351, 390?
