up until 4 months ago,i didnt know how to pull codes either.trust me,its very easy.get some metal wiring, hook one end to the negative battery (man oh man dont touch the positive terminals cause they heat up very HOT very QUICK) and stick the other end of the metal wiring to the STO (self test output) not the STI (self test input).the STO/STI are located on the far right, very back under the hood.they're there to purposly read codes.unhook the STO,stick the wire in the 2nd hole,on the bottom, closest to the right (STO looks like a small house shape,or triangle shape).
then, turn the key over, but dont start the truck! lights will come on for a few seconds then go off.few seconds later the code light comes on.it'll in the form of flashes.count the number of flashes.there will be a 1 sec pause in between numbers.
3 digit codes for 6 cylinder and 4 digit codes for 8 cylinders.after the 3rd or 4th number, there ought to be a 6 sec pause.then the next row of numbers will come on.
dont be fooled tho, like i was in the past.old codes can still be there from past that havent been cleaned out.like for instance,if you pull a code indicating you have a bad starter or alternator and you KNOW darn well they're ok and not broke down, then you need to clear all the codes out.how? easy, disconnect both terminals from the battery for about eh 30 mins then reconnect them and run codes again.half,if not all,of the codes will be gone.
know what,i ought to make a vid on how to do this then post on here.ill do that tomm for ya.makes it alot easier.

A sticky is a post ( thread ) that contains commonly requested information. There is one in this section about how to check codes on a obd1 system. Just look through the first couple of posts. If your using the phone app its hard to find so use a computer or access the full site. Read it a few times because it is simple but if done wrong you can short your computer system. The way listed above as Sean stated is a little inaccurate and more difficult than nessacary. Old codes are 2 digit.

So, I did that test, and now I think the problem is worse. Immediately it started running terrible. It can hardly run without stepping on the gas. I'm not sure what to do now..

I started the truck up (probably a mistake) and I know you said not to. I've seen similar tests with it on. And not it runs terrible. Cant run without my foot on the pedal
