Default Oil Pressure Gage

So the sending unit for the oil pressure gauge is actually a switch with a resistor. I'm wondering if anyone has replaced the sending unit with a real one? Any reason it won't work?

I don't think the gauge motor in the dash is designed to work with a broad ranged sending unit.

I think I recall a thread a few years back where somebody removed the resistor in the instrument cluster saying it would make you gauge become functional. I don’t really see how it would work with the current pressure switch. The other issue I see is with no numbers on the gauge, how do you determine if you’re getting sufficient oil press?

The only real way to do this is to add an aftermarket sending unit and gauge. There's no way to integrate one part but not the other.

I'm with @nrivera04, and willing to go one step further - It ain't gonna work.

According to the factory wiring service manual the OP switch wires directly to the instrument cluster, which has a microprocessor that manages the gauges and CAN bus communications with the PCM. As long as the IC tells the PCM the switch is closed, the PCM figures (oil pressure being directly proportional to RPM) every is all ok.

But I am a fan of 'knowing exactly what my oil pressure really is'.

EDIT: BTW, so as to not be confusing or misleading, this ^^^^^ was cold start on a hot S. Texas day. Full operating temperature, in Drive, A/C on, idle will be ~ 20 - 22.
