I am trying to see how or if it is possible to access the side of the bed through the fender well. When I look in the bed it appears as if there should be a gap between the outside of the truck and the inside of the bed above the fender well.
I want to know if there is a way to get in there. The reason being I am wanting to mount a shovel/axe in the bed of my truck for when I go off roading. this looks like a place I can put some bolts and it not tear up the outside of the truck.
Don't think you'll be able to do it that way. The space between the double wall is most likely minuscule.
Where I work we have several of our Super Duty rigs equipped with fire fighting equipment, shovels, ax, etc... on the inside of the bed.
Most set-ups use a vertical post between the under side, or lip of the rail and the floor of the bed.
Another trick I have seen is to epoxy some thick ABS plastic vertically on the inside wall of the bed and then self tapping screws or threaded inserts drilled into the plastic.
it appears that you can access that area by pulling the wheel well trim. then screws under the trim and in the wheel well. looks to be about 4 inches. for anyone else who may be wondering.
