My Sync 2 to Sync 3 Swap
I bit the bullet and decided to buy the Sync 3 with nav setup for my truck to replace the old Sync 2 with nav. The install was pretty straight forward with the only wire modifications to the new USB hub. My photos below will detail the install. There's notes inline with the pictures.
Special thanks to TexasFording for getting the unit all set up for my truck's configuration.
Remove speaker cover and unscrew two screws.
Remove two screws for cover and pull off.
Remove Harnesses
Everything exposed.
Remove old GPS module and stick new GPS module to the top of it with double sided 3M tape.
Clip unit back in orig location.
Route wire down to Sync unit.

Mark and drill hole on old bracket. This is the bracket i removed from the Sync 2 module. I eyeballed it and drilled, no fancy measurements. I didn't show the other side because I didn't do a great job on that side. lol
Both sides shown mounted. I used a few washers to space it correctly.
Everything connected and ready to mount.
Dry run and power up.
USB connected using Spotify app.
Maps.
Making sure climate control works.

Now this is where it got a bit tricky. The 2015 media hub is wired differently than the 2016 for sync 3.
From the 2015 side I needed to tap into pins 1 (12v) and 12 (ground) and then run it to pins 1 (12v) and 4 (ground) on the new Sync 3 hub. Until i get the correct pigtail, below is my ghetto adaption. Don't mind my horrible soldering. It was a very difficult location and i have a large soldering iron. I forgot to take a picture of the connection to the new hub, but I used an old harness and removed two pins from it, then soldered and shrink wrapped the female pins. Then I just plugged them onto the pins in the new hub.
Here's everything working with Apple Carplay.

Congrats on the upgrade and good write up man. What was the purpose of drilling the hole in the bracket?
Also, did you buy the new ford micro usb cable or use a regular male to male?

The original bracket from my Sync 2 unit didn't line up with the new holes. Fortunately, I only needed to drill one hole. I didn't buy any new USB cable, the original cable worked fine. I attempted to make my own, just to try it, but It didn't work for CarPlay. You absolutely need the new USB hub.

My usb cable has the female USB on the hub end. Was hoping I could buy a regular male to male micro usb cable to use when I do my swap instead of spending the $30 for a factory one.
