Default Trying to pass emissions in Mass...need help. (Stage 3 / 5 star)

I recently left the military and moved from the Ft Lewis (Tacoma, WA) area to the Boston area.

I own a 2015 F150 XL w/ 3.5 EB with the following performance mods.

2015 F150 3.5L EcoBoost Stainless Works Catted 3" Downpipes
2015 F150 2.7L & 3.5L EcoBoost aFe Magnum FORCE Pro Dry S Cold Air
2015 F150 2.7L / 3.5L EcoBoost aFe ATLAS 4" Cat-Back Exhaust Kit
SCT X4 tuner with 5 star unlimited tunes.

Theoretically it will pass emissions testing here in Mass since it is still equipped with cats.

When I arrived back here in Mass I took my truck to go get inspected. At the time I had just used the SCT X4 to upload a 93R 5 star tune. I waited about 200 miles then took it to the garage to get inspected. As soon as they hooked it up to the machine it ended the process. They said something to the effect that the computer was modified so we cannot proceed. They hadn't even gotten to the actual emissions test.

I told them what mods I had and they suggested that it may be because I didn't put enough miles on the truck after tuning it for the 93R tune. I said ok and I put another 500 miles on the truck and came back and nothing had changed.

I then returned the vehicle to stock (tune wise) however within about 25 miles the CEL comes on with (0420 / 0430) Catalyst System Efficiency Below threshold Bank 1/2.

I was told it will not pass emissions with a CEL light and codes thrown.

I emailed Stage 3 / 5 Star to ask them what to do but I haven't received an answer yet. If anyone has any suggestions I'm game. I no longer have any of the factory exhaust pieces but I paid extra for the catted pipe so it would pass emission so I'm somewhat pissed off.

Pics to make it more real.

No P1000 DTC, just the ones listed. I had attributed it to the aftermarket catalytic converters in the SW downpipe. I highly doubt anything is wrong with the truck it was just when I switched back to the stock tune the aftermarket cats likely threw the code.

I was hoping there was a way to account for the aftermarket cats in the tune and then get it inspected but I honestly couldn't even get past the initial hookup to the machine before they said it wouldn't unlock (or something along those lines).

Once I'm done getting it inspected I'll go back to the 93R tune just trying to figure out if anyone has done anything like this.

Hi flow cats cause CELs too. The tune most likely turned off the rear sensors which is why you never got a CEL with it.

High flow cats are gonna screw you... Can you put stockers back on easily?

Wow! Massachusetts is pretty rough. We don't have an inspection, per se, in Ohio. Some of the more urban counties have emissions testing (mine does not) but back when I lived in a county that had it, it involved only exhaust testing. Nothing was hooked to the computer. You would flunk if the CEL was lit, however.

I spoke to Stage 3, they have an emissions friendly tune however I'm guessing the cats will still cause the failure...

The tune (even if emissions friendly) still has to account for the hi-flow cats as far as I know.

Your test results show three system not ready for test. You can probably pass if you get them ready.

Each time you remove the battery or change a tune, you set all systems to "not ready". You need to drive a while to get all systems ready. Usually, the way to do this is to perform a "drive cycle". This is a pattern of driving that will ensure each system gets tested. In my old VW, I'd have to do a drive cycle about 4 times to get all the systems ready. Look in the internet for a Ford F150 specific drive cycle to try. Usually you start from a cold start, idle a while, drive a while, coast a while, drive some more. A drive cycle might take 20 minutes.

Then, after your drive cycle, use an ODB reader to check emissions readiness. It will give a list similar to your report except you have all systems show ready or N/A.

In the previous car, It would take a couple of days to sort it out.

The above hopefully will help. Its not based on Ford specific experience though.

I put over 1000 miles on it between the first failure (the posted image) and the second time I went in there. I had zero CEL or failures when I went in the second time.

I've been in there several times since without resetting the computer hoping with enough miles it would correct itself.

It wasn't until today that I reset it to stock tune and tried it again which didn't work and as soon as I left within 5 miles the CEL came on (with the listed codes).
