pretty sure the spedo from the 86 is in the tranny where as the 88 would be in the rear end. both transmissions do however have over drive.

id personally look for the same year/ body style truck...

is it cold where you are? probably not your issue, but my 95 in the winter would just turn over when I went to cold start it and it wouldn't fire. I had to prime it 2-3 times and then it would start...
