I usually just pull the fuel pump relay and start the truck. It will run for a few seconds until the fuel pressure drops. Then I check for pressure at the schraeder valve on the fuel rail.

IIRC the 87 has two fuel pumps, one in the tank and another on the frame rail under the cab. The tank pump is a low pressure unit and the frame one is high pressure.

Buy some new clamps or cables. If you buy clamps don't skimp. I actually added one from the battery to the engine block. The cables are frequently an issue with these trucks.

Besides the above items I would also consider changing out the timing gears while its out and pull the oil pan and inspect or replace the bearings. Check the oil pan sometimes they rust out.
