Default New Slave Cylinder

I have a 1993 with the 4.9l and 5 speed mazda transmission. It has been a phenomenal truck. I have over 300,000 on it and i have had the transmission out to be rebuilt (2x) and now the clutch will not keep pressure with a new master cylinder. I dropped the transmission again thinking I should have just replaced the slave cylinder the last time I had it out.

Well the bell housing will not sit flush against the engine when the slave cylinder is in direct contact with the pressure plate. I cannot get it to seat. I thought must be something in the way. Nope. Then I thought "Open the bleed port on the slave cylinder dummy" made no difference.
I am attaching 2 pictures. I know the image shows the top of the transmission way out of square with the engine but trust me when I say it was only like that after I gave up and decided I need help.

I have never replaced a slave cylinder before. Do I need to compress it? I did not think to compare the old and new one... stupid mistake I know... but at a casual look they are the same and everything lined up pretty well. Think it might be the wrong part?
Any thoughts are welcome. Even sarcastic ones (within reason)
