I'm a long time reader and this is my first post. I've got minimal automotive mechanical experience. My most major operation was successfully changing a set of head gaskets. I have never been formally trained in auto mechanics.
I am not fully versed in auto nomenclature so please forgive some of my terms/descriptions. I have to give a lot of credit to a write up in a bronco forum about a rear main seal change.
My truck is a 1995 Ford F-150 XL, regular cab, automatic, 351W with a 4x4 setup. The truck has 205k miles with a minor drip from the oil pan.
I am removing the Transmission (E4OD)/Transfer Case (TxC) BW1356. I saved a couple hundred $ on the rebuild and was hoping to gain the knowledge of how my truck is put together through this. I am not saying this is the perfect way, but it worked for me.
Step 1) Lift truck onto jack stands with a high enough clearance to get the transmission out from under while on a transmission jack. I guessed. Disconnect the neg battery cable.
Step 2) Drain the transmission fluid from the pan (20x 10mm bolts). Be sure to have a large catch pan for this as most do not have a drain plug.
Keep a few bolts in (but loose) on one side to allow some of the fluid to spill out one side.
Pull the filter off which will be followed by the drainage of more fluid.
Step 3) Drain the torque converter (TC). Towards the front of the trans you should have a little rubber grommet covering the access to your TC.
You will need to rotate the engine* in the clockwise direction until you are able to see a plug (7/16”). Once you have this plug accessible you will need to remove it and allow the fluid to drain. Be sure to have a large enough catch as it is quite a bit of fluid and takes a while. *The center of the harmonic balancer has a good point to rotate the engine. I used a 15/16” socket and a 1/2” drive ratchet to rotate with no problem. Clockwise direction.
Step 4) Remove rear drive shaft, clean trans pan and drain TxC. While the TC was draining I remover the rear drive shaft. The rear of the driveshaft is secured to the rear diff using 4 x 12mm/12 pt bolts. These were tough to break. I match marked the driveshaft/connecting plate/rear diff before removal for corresponding reinstall.
Once the four bolts were removed I tapped the rear of the driveshaft to separate it from the rear diff. Once that was separated I slid the other end out of the rear of the transfer case. The TC still did not finish draining so I took that time to clean the trans pan/magnet and reinstall.
I then drained the transfer case by removing the drain plug (3/8” drive extension). Lastly I replaced the drain plug in both the TC and TxC.
