Default 1987 F150 Starting Problems

I have a 1987 with 4.9 300 with a brand new starter and the flex plate or fly wheel is in good shape. The truck starts but when i turn the key, there is a loud grinding noise. It sounds like the starter is barely making enough contact with the flex plate or fly wheel but I'm not sure. Any suggestions as to what the problem is and what is causing the grinding noise??

Is it a flex plate (auto tranny) or flywheel (manual)?

Default Did you resolve your starting problem

Hi SCole,

I am having the same issue on my 88 f150 4.9 auto trans. I have gone thru 5 starters and one flywheel. I thought all was good last year when I put the new flywheel on with a reman starter and the crap is starting up again now.

Did you ever arrive at a resolution?

Thanks
