1977 F150 - Tips for engaging 4x4?

With all of the snow hitting the Northeast today, I decided to test the 4x4 on my 1977 F150 I purchased late last year. After several attempts, I was not able to get the 4H to engage. I locked the hubs and tried shifting from 2H in park, neutral, forward, and reverse. Does anyone know of any tricks / steps to get the 4H engaged, or know if this is a sign of a bad transfer case? I appreciate any thoughts.

Don't know for sure about a 77 but most of the later ones were shift on the fly between 2h and 4h. You have to stop and put it in neutral to go between low and high (or high to low).
Don't know for sure about 77, but you could try shifting it while it's moving in gear (slowly) and see what happens.

Have you tried backing up 20 or 30 feet and trying ?

Thanks for the replies guys, I have tried to change it from 2h to 4h while in neutral, park, in reverse, and even while wheels spinning in 2h. I did not move it forward and backward very far as I was not getting the traction to move that far in the 1.5 foot of snow.
