Not sure what you mean by the whole shaft?
Suggest the distributor likely needs to be pulled for inspection. If lucky (relatively), could be something like the shaft binding up where replacing the distributor solves the problem. Not so lucky would be if drive gear damage were seen, leaving one to wonder what the gear on the camshaft looks like. Could've had a timing chain fail, but wouldn't think the distributor would be easy to turn, and you should've heard a very weird engine loping / imbalance as it turned over trying to restart.
At any rate, figuring out why the distributor is loose is the first step. Good luck, and keep us posted.

i have a similar issue with mine. I went to kick the transmission down and it went to almost a limp mode like it does when the vss acts up. however the abs light didnt illuminate and cel did. It would slam into gears when transitioning from forward to reverse gears. I took the vehicle back disconnected the battery to try to clear any codes that would cause a limp trigger so to speak. I reconnected the terminals and now it wont start. I have fire to cylinders fuel pumps run fuel to the rail and it turns over. Any help would be great i have been reading schematics to understand where the injectors get there signal. Its a 94 F150 5.0 with the e4od
