I have used this forum often but have decided to join and post for this one. I believe the comp on my ole' work truck has gone bad. It has given me a few problems, rough idle or die at startup, then I thought fuel pump was going out but relay started clicking like crazy and would not start or build pressure. Then it started ok a couple times but now the fuel pump does not shut off. When key is turned to run the fp will fire up but will not stop after prime and truck will crank but does not run well. The fuel pump running inables me from pulling the codes and I have read that these are signs of a bad ECM/PCM. I have also heard that something else usually causes the comp to go bad but not sure where to start since I can't pull codes and truck doesn't run. Any recommendations? Should I change the PCM then pull codes assuming this allows me to? Or could it be some other electrical/sensor issue(s). Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try pulling the fuse to the fuel pump then see if you can get the code from the computer? If you cant get the code then i would see about replacing the computer?

Thanks, will do. I did try with the relay pulled and it didn't work. I will try pulling the fuse.

I hope this is the right place to post this; my first post on this site. Had a series of unusual things happen that seems to have affected my PCM. Engine was cold (-10) and I had to crank for maybe 20 seconds continuously to start it. I let it warm up for 30 minutes, then drove to work. Within one mile, the "Check Engine" light came on. Took it to Midas; no light when I started, but on the way the light came on again. They told me the EGR wasn't working, and then said it was because the PCM was not sending a signal to the valve. So they want $1,000 to replace the PCM. I don't have that much money right now. On the way home, no "Check Engine" light. Question is, could the cold temp/cold start, with a long cranking time (drawing battery down), could all of that done something to my PCM temporarily? Do you think maybe my PCM will still work okay? If it's bad, is there a cheaper way to fix it? Thanks if you can help.

You could get it cheaper yourself at car-parts.com and install it yourself. You'll probably end up spending around 60 dollars

O'Reilly Auto Parts quoted me between $100 and $350, depending on exactly which one I've got. Wish I could find one for $60. Anyway they said I'd have to pull the old and find some numbers to know exactly which one to replace it with. That's why I'm hoping it was just a temporary issue that will resolve itself.

Just checking. It's a bull **** story, doesn't sound to me like they know how to work on it.

What you need to do is take your PCM out, get on your computer, go to the web site I told you(car-parts.com), then searching that site for your PCM and it should be around 60 dollars, make sure the numbers match. If you order it it should arrive in a week.
