Default Distributor questions?

Alright I need to replace the distributor in my 91. I'm not sure if I have castiron or steel gears. Heres my question, Without pulling the distributor I have this question are both distrbiutors the same but with different gears? If so, couldnt you just put the original drive gear on the distributor? cast iron distributor is $20 from rock auto and $70 for steel gear.

if that cast iron gear has been in that motor for 25years, I don't think that would be good.

Yes you can swap the gear. You would most likely have the cast gear.

Non roller blocks have cast iron gears, roller blocks have steel gears. Typically 94 and up engines should have steel gear. Yours being a 91, as long as it's the stock original engine it should be a non roller engine so it should use a cast iron gear.
