The selected pump must actually be pumping fuel in order for the switching valve to operate.

I have a 1990 model and I removed the rear tank all I did was joined up the hoses and taped up the wiring and it runs fine... It was no problem at all. The switch in the dash is still connected as it was before if I switch it to the rear tank the engine stalls after a few seconds. It was a simple job...
