What I'm talking about is at the base of the steering column, it's actually the connector for the air bag clock spring-not sure if you have to unplug it but I always do just to be safe. Then after you unscrew the airbag you will be able to pull it out, there will be a connector behind it as well but it is obvious once it starts coming out.

Just make sure you give it a few minutes to lose any residual charge, like I said leave your door open or turn you headlights on to help pull any stray current left in the wiring. I'll even press my horn a few times just to make sure.

Im going to to try cleaning out the contacts of the buttons I have before spending $$$ on ones I may not need or be able to return. Worth a shot! Other than alcohol and a q tip on the contacts what could I put on the contacts after cleaning to make the connectivity better?

Electrical grease. Not a bad idea to try to clean it up and see if it works.

Use quick drying electronic cleaner to clean the contacts. Any connectors you can use qtips or soft wire brush and QDEC on the prongs, for the female ends just respray the prongs and insert/unplug 3 or 4 times, this will clean the inside contacts. And a small amount of dielectric grease will help prevent future corrosion, use sparingly though as too much can prevent contact or keep the connectors from joining properly, a thin layer on the prongs would be sufficient.
