'91 302 starter continues to run
I'm a new user here, but I have read a lot of the info thats posted on this site. I have a 1991 f150 with a 302 v8, manual 4speed. Ive had on again off again issues for awhile but Ive recently been trying to figure out why my starter is continuously running. I installed a new starter and solenoid, but still having the same problems. I checked diagrams to make sure the wiring was correct on the solenoid and used a voltage tester while its running. I have power to the solenoid, its starts and while running I dont have any current on the power line to the starter or on the ignition wire at the solenoid. Ive pulled the ignition wire off the solenoid while running and there was no change with the starter, its still spinning along. Im not sure whats goin on with it and Im at a lost. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

I played around with everything this week and it looks like its the flywheel driving the starter while running. Im not sure if I have the wrong starter or if its an issue with the flywheel

I finally got it figured out, turns out the problem was something much simpler. I tested all wires from the solenoid, ignition, battery and at the starter, they were all fine and working the way they were intended. I pulled the starter off and tested it making sure the pinion wasn't staying engaged while the motor was running, that was all fine. I figured somehow the flywheel must have been keeping the starter spinning since all the electrical pieces were working properly. After looking at the flywheel position and the position of the small gear in the starter is when it clicked to me. The gear in the starter was about 3/4" closer to the flywheel than it should have been. Turns out theres a different model starter for a manual trans than for an automatic. I had put the one on for an automatic instead of the one for a manual.., i have a manual trans. Fired it up and its running smooth.. for now. Lesson learned

Usually the solenoid melts itself together keeping voltage to the starter.
...which is usually due to corroded battery terminals. wrong starter huh? That sucks. Glad you figured it out. Hope the part house guy learned how to read part numbers since...lol
