89 f150 cranks but won't start
My truck is an f150 with the 300 i6, and 4 speed t18 4x4. I was driving it a couple days ago, I shifted from 1st to second and stalled it out. I tried to roll start it with no luck. I tried roll starting over using the key because I have to jump the solenoid anyway. Won't start after that at all. I think it's getting fuel because I get a hint of gas when I try to start it. When it was warm after I stalled it, it sounded like it wanted to start, but wouldn't. Now when cold it sounds like it's not getting spark at all because I shot starting fluid at it with no luck. I'm pretty limited on tools and money so I'm hoping it's a cheap fix. I worked on a chevy 4.3l that would lope when you try to start but wouldn't stay running, the issue was a cap and rotor. The f150 sort of is acting like that, I haven't had it apart yet though. Plz help.

If you are not getting spark, and the ICM and the coil check out, I would lean towards the PIP sensor in the distributor. I have had to replace two ( replaced distributor instead of sensor) in a short time. First one was used, second new. With this problem, don't get fooled by the fact it starts up again, it will fail and more often as time goes by. It's also very random when it happens. There is a test for it in the Haynes manual, but it confused me so I just replaced the distributor. A new one was $100 at O'Reilly's. Have not had a problem now in 30k miles.

Thanks guys. I was going to check for spark but my tools are in my sisters car because I was fixing her regulator. So armed with only a pocket knife I couldn't do much. Next time I'm at the land with tools I'll look farther into and come back if the issue isn't resolved.

Ok I got out there yesterday and tried to ark something offthe ign. Coil and there was no spark.i have read that that would rule out the pip as a suspect. I'm leaning more towards icm, but I need confirmation plz. Everything is coated in powersteering fluid and grime so it wouldn't surprize me if anything quits working over there

Pulled the ign. Control module today, and managed to lose both bolts. Something I haven't done in years. I guess I'm asking where would I get more bolts, is it something I can get from a pick and pull yard

Got the truck fixed. It was the ignition control module. But I want to say to all having this issue. These symptoms are shared by 3 other possible things. Ignition control module, pip sensor, or the ignition control module. All three are relatively cheap and easy. Good luck all.
