89 f150 4.9 tries to start when i connect the battery

The solenoid is part of the starter, and an '89 shouldn't have that type of starter. Did you replace ONLY the solenoid, or the whole starter? Or are you talking about the starter RELAY on the fender near the battery? Click this & study it:
