Popping through the intake is probably a lean misfire. Timing could cause this if its overly advanced, however I would look for a vacuum leak. You can check for a vacuum leak by spraying around the intake manifold with some carb cleaner and listen for changes in the idle. Be careful not to spray around the ignition wires as you can easily start a flash fire. You may want to keep a garden hose nearby. You may also want to change the fuel filter as it could be partially clogged.

Why can`t you pull codes? What do you want to do just throw parts at it? Do you have a vac gauge? Sounds like your exhaust is plugged to.

i can't pull codes cause it doesn't have any, yes I have been throwing parts at it, the catalytic converter isn't plugged cause there isn't one, I did get it fixed for the most part finally! I fixed the exhaust leak around the O2 sensor bung, and put a new TPS on it and it's running great! it still idles up to about 2300 rpms when I start it but it quickly comes down to a nice smooth idle, and i'm only getting 9 mpg I think a lot of that is the C6 transmission since it runs almost 3500 rpms at 60 mph, I appreciate all the help couldn't of done it with out this forum! no I don't have a vacuum gauge I lost all my tools in a shop fire and still settling with the insurance companies, should I get one and test it?

If that's that case your computer is dead and needs to be replaced and that's your problem.

If the idle comes down quick I think your good to go. No need to test vac if it is working good now. As far as pulling codes go. Check your grounds on the computer. As far as we know the bulb is burnt out on the dash. Try checking codes with the multimeter before replacing the computer. I don`t know any thing about the c6 trans but at 3500 rpm`s at 60 is going to kill you on the mpg`s.

That doesn't make any sense. If you can't pull codes you wouldn't know there aren't any, and there can't be none because you always get at least one.

The HaYnes book has a pretty decent section on the diagnosis of the obd1 system....

I wou;d reset the cpu by disconnecting the ground cable and use a test light as suggested above, or better yet replace the 1.59 bulb in the dash. I just swapped mine with the stupid rear abs light that has been lit since 1998! lol

YOU HAVE TO PULL CODES!!! You'll run out of money way before you ever fix it by throwing parts at w/o a proper diagnosis!

3500 at 60????

are running 4.11 rear gears?

Well the problem has been found, the wiring to the original E40D was shouting out causing the pickup to go into a limp mode, cleaned out the old plug and filled full of gasket maker and no problems for 3 weeks now, should I post this to the drivetran forum so someone don't go threw the same mistakes as me?
