FORD tailgate
does anyone what years had the tailgate with "FORD" stamped across the center of it, instead of the little sticker thing in the corner? and can they be put on a '92 with no alteration?

Hi Everybody!Unfortunately my tailgate finish panel of my 86 F150 is broken, especially the red reflector between the 2 taillights.I know that is hard to find a new one so I will try to fix it.I will receive the car in 2 weeks but I will build something to replace the reflector between the taillights. So could anyone tell me the exact measurements of the red reflector?I will try it with Plexiglas and red reflector foil and the fix it where the original was. Thanks a lot!

The '86 t/g panel had no reflector. The red was only used from '87-91. This was the '80-86 panel:

The NEXT few show the later panels. It sounds to me like that truck's t/g has already been swapped for a later one. This is what the later panel looks like without the plastic strip:

When you get the truck, spend some time familiarizing yourself with it by reading all its ID tags. This caption explains the VC label codes:

1986 did have a red reflector across the bottom of the tailgate.
1987-91 plain tailgate had stamped letters. They were the rounded Ford letters. The tailgate trim had a red reflector. These tailgates will fit through 1997 (F250HD & F350)
1992-97 plain tailgate was not stamped with Ford letters.The tailgate trim had a grey reflector.

Then I guess I haven't paid close enough attention to that year of pickups. I assumed it would be like Broncos, which didn't change until '87.No, they won't. The t/g strikes changed between '87-91 (possibly in '88) from the old plunger (similar to a house door) to an automotive-style latch (like the truck cab doors).
