Default zf5 2wd to 4x4

This might be a really dumb question but is it possible to swap a 2wd zf5 to a 4x4 from a e40d trans that is 4x4 so that my stock transfercase will bolt up to it or am i better off buying a 4x4 zf5 i know it is a ton of work to change 2x4 to 4x4 but im 16 and everything is a tight budget. Im looking to do a 7.3 swap into an my f150 but the parts truck is a 2wd and ive read up that my e40d transfer case will bolt up to a 4x4 zf5. Tell me if thats wrong. Thanks ill be starting the swap shortly after the snow finishes melting. Thanks everyone in advance.

The short answer is no. You need a tranny from a 4x4. Ideally, a transmission, transfer case, and driveshafts from a donor 4x4 with the same wheelbase.

Most of the transfer cases are going to bolt up to a 4x4 tailshaft housing. The tailshaft housing will specific to the transmission. The actual tailshaft (output shaft) will be specific to 2WD or 4x4.
The transmission will be specific to the motor.
If you have a 2WD trans that will bolt up to a 7.3 you would have to change the tailshaft and tailshft housing to make it bolt up to a 4x4 transfer case.
Is that what you were asking ?

I understand the tailshaft and housing would have to be swapped, i just wanted to confirm that my tranfercase from my stock auto trans for the 5.8 would bolt up to a zf5 trans. Also was wondering id the e40d trans output shaft would be able to swap to a zf5 2x4 but im almost positive that wont happen plus it is a ton of work either way.

ive got a steel of a deal on a 1995 powerstroke with a 5 speed manual but it is a 2x4 dually so i will have to get a different trans but i can sell the old one to make up some of the difference.
