Alright I made another attempt at this today. I got the plate line up, got the tranny lined up, got two bolts started, then a third, and at this point, the tranny was still 1/8" from the block. All turns freely by hand.

So I tightened the bolts down (and the passenger side went in with a huge fight). Block and tranny now flush and !@#$%^&* frozen solid.

Can't turn anything by hand, but yet the t/c bolts came right through the flywheel.

GRRRRRRRRRRRR I'm losing patience with this thing.

Also, I'm still not understanding what "pump" is supposed to be down there.

I tore the whole thing back apart and the tranny is totally separated from the block.

WHAT am I doing wrong????

With the trans out put a drain pan under the converter and pull it out of the trans [you will loose oil] this would be a good time to replace the front pump seal and do a fluid and filter change. With the converter off examin the hub where it goes into the trans and you will see the two notches that drive the front pump. Now look into the trans through the seal opening and you will see the corosponding notches in the pump. when you reinstall the converter these notches must line up and the converter must be all the way back in the trans this will allow room for the trans to mate with the engine and still turn freely so you gan line up the converter to flywheel bolts. Note when you remove the converter there is a good chance that the front seal will leak if you dont replace it at this time. If in doubt about the procedure invest in a manual or check one out at the librarey.

The transmission pump is driven by the torque converter. If the torque converter isn't engaged in the pump it could smash it.

Alright, I'll check it out. I have the tranny about 1" from the block. No way it's going back any further w/out tearing off the front and rear drive shafts. Not something I wanted to do but well within my skill set.

I do, however, agree about replacing some seals while I'm down there. The tranny oil pan seal is leaking to begin with.

Grrr... so tired of spending money on this truck.

(Did I mention I'm selling it?)

You need to loosing all the bell housing bolts up and pry the two apart the torque converter studs need to go though the flex plate the same time as the bell housing goes on the guide pins when you are prying the two apart have some one turn the engine over by hand till the studs go in the flex plate

You still have the drive shafts connected? Take the 10 minutes and remove them, it's less stuff you are fighting with. Did you spin and push the torque converter into the tranny until you heard the three clicks? I believe it is clockwise but if I'm wrong please correct me. Do you have the transmission cross member removed or is it still there? Are you pinching any of the tranny cooler lines that are suppose to be running along the passenger side? Any wire harnesses hanging down gettin in the way?

They were, until just tonight.

And no, I didn't touch the torque converter until just tonight.

I removed both driveshafts, the crossmember which supports the rear of the tranny, and disconnected the shift linkage, tranny cooler lines, and the wiring connector for the 4wd motor. Then I slowly lowered the tranny with the only jack I have.

Let me tell you all what a BIIIITTCH this job is when you are by yourself!!!

Anyway, pulled the torque converter, drip pan at the ready.... SPLASH!!! Good thing I followed everyone's advice.

You guys want to tell me where you see a pump, or anything to line up with, or anything to "click" into?

Doesn't look like anything is leaking, either. Tranny oil pan seal definitely is but that's after I get everything back together.

LOL speaking of things torn apart, both u-joints on the front driveshaft disintegrated when I took the "u" brackets off the spider caps. I should have expected as much.

Now that I have the tranny basically on the ground, t/c laying in my shop, and new coffee can full of hardware, how the F**K do I put this back together correctly?

Thank you, everyone, for the replies, they've been helpful and have been providing the motivation I need to keep from giving up on this truck.

Inside past the seal are the pump ears.

And how the hell is the TC supposed to lock into something behind that seal?

Did you even look at the torque converter to see what has been explained to you?
