Default Whats in the Dr Tranny stuff?!

So I thought I'd start a new thread. I was suggested, by you kind young learned fellows, to first try this anti shudder Dr Tranny stuff (sounds like a bad porno movie)

What in the world is in this stuff?!?! Unicorn pee? Cause it works like magic. Like rainbows and coming out of my exhaust.

Obviously, there probably needs to have something fixed in the tranny either a flush or liquid change or filter or something else. But whats in that stuff that fixed the whatever it is thats making the shudder and bzzzzzz sound? This is just a band aid right? But ive read other forums and other car makes that people drive a long time with no problems after that stuff.

I don't know what it is. All I know is...I just bought a 92 F150 4.9 with the e4od transmission and it shuddered like crazy. I did a full transmission service, drained the torque converter too, new Dorman pan with drain plug, reusable gasket, new filter, filled it with Motorcraft Mercon V fluid and added one bottle of the Dr. Tranny stuff, and I'm absolutely amazed at how well my transmission shifts now.

Yeah, I guess it's time to do all that stuff now as a service.

Will start looking at how to do the torque converter. Pan and filter looks easy but not sure about the converter. Google is my friend. Youtube is my mistress.

This video is a different year F150 but same procedures though right? Not sure if I have the capability to use that drill pump thing he shows but basically looks like this:


1. Remove plug on transmission
2. Turn engine crank to the RIGHT until the drain plug is visible
3. Remove plug, drain,
4. Clean plug and replace and cover
5. Drop pan and drain
6. Replace filter
7. Clean everything
8. A bunch of quarts of Mercon V.

Does that sound about right order?

Sounds about right. Dropping the pan is messy, messy. Leave a couple bolts in one corner and slowly loosen them so the pan can drain out the opposite corner. Still going to be very, very messy.
Lots of rags and cover the floor with cardboard or plastic or both. Still going to be messy. But it is what it is.

The anti shudder stuff - basically the torque convertor lock up clutch has to be able to slip sometimes; there's actually a part of the program in the pcm which makes it slip constant at times; especially that magic area around 25 to 55.

When the convertor clutches get old they don't slip so good; they start to grab and slip and grab and slip... and grab. That's where you get the shudder.
The tranny fix helps it slip nicer, as I understand it. Sort of like a trac lok diff needs additive to help the clutches slip (so they don't grab all the time).

If your tranny is working good otherwise just plan on getting a new convertor eventually. You have to pull the tranny to change it so you could look at having that changed if you change your engine.

Also, not sure about Mercon V. Mercon. Talk to Ford. Somebody said they got a better deal there anyway.

My mechanic was hinting at that. No he doesn't need or want that money/job. He has his contact do HIS transmissions. He showed me one he just got the day before I picked up my truck from him that was going into his El Camino race car.

That'll bring the price up to rebuild tran about 1K + engine + install. Ugh.

The old MerconV wasn't compatible with Mercon for a while, but Ford TSB 06144 says Mercon V was updated to be backwards compatible and is the replacement for the old Mercon. Just don't use Mercon LV or SP or anything that says it's compatible with either, like some multi-vehicle universal fluids. I bought 20 quarts of the Mercon V at my local Ford dealer for only $5.15 a quart. Seems to be working great in my e4od trans.
