I am unsure what transmission the truck has. Its an 1988 2wd with a 3 spd auto, I believe it is a 3 spd. It doesn't seem to have an OD. I was just given the truck a couple days ago and haven't had much time to actually research the running gear on it yet. Thank you so much for the information you have given me so far. I would imagine that i need to stay with a tranny from a 1988-91 correct?

Probably a c6 then? Check the door jamb sticker on the drivers side for the trans code. Its just easier to use the same base trans. That way you don't need to add any electronics and the bolt pattern for the bell housing will match. For example, if you put an e4od in and you didn't have one before, you'd have to add stuff to your truck to get it to work right. If you have a c6 and get the 4x4 version you should be able to just swap straight across. The years aren't necessarily a concern as long as it can bolt to your engine.
