Default TTB Front End Question

I was just given my grandfathers 1988 F150. Its currently a 2wd but I want to convert it to a 4wd. I know there is a big argument for either a straight axle swap or the TTB axle. I am comfortable with doing the TTB and feel for what i will be doing with it that it is the more logical idea. With that being said i found a parts truck that is 4wd that is pretty close to my house. My question is..... Is there any difference on the TTB axle between a truck with an I6 versus the 5.0? I know there are transfer case differences but is the front end and front driveshaft all the same?

Thank you for your time.

You realize you'll need a 4x4 transmission or to rebuild yours as a 4x4 right? Its not just a front end swap and slapping a t-case to your current system.

I actually did not know that i had to get a different tranny as well. I was under the impression that it was just a transfer case. But that's no big deal if i need a 4wd transmission i will get one. Do you have a recommendation? I would like to stay with an automatic since the truck already is a auto.

The difference is the length of the shaft coming out of the back of the transmission IIRC. Also I believe there's a piece between the transmission and t-case. Just get an automatic from a 4x4 parts truck that has your same engine so the bell housing matches. Might as well pull as much from a donor 4x4 as you can
