Default Std Trans Repeated Failure -- Cooling ??

Mainly looking for internet info contacts. Friend has 1989 5 speed std trans which has failed multiple times. Some have said it was 'overheating' which I never heard of with a stick trans. Questions include: 1) Is there a sordid history of problems with those trannys? 2) I have not physically crawled under it -- is there a "pan" similar to automatics that might be replaced with a finned cooling pan or one that held a lot more oil ?

Appreciate feedback.

I unfortunately do not know for sure what the exact problem is. It is an old vehicle and he claims to be on his 4th transmission. Used primarily in farming. I know in at least one instance he lost teeth on low gear. When I ran across him today he was looking for a way to cool the transmission.

I realize there is so little info here it is impossible to diagnose anything. Just wondered if there was a notorious history with the late 80's 5sp standard transmissions and whether they have a pan that might be swapped out for larger oil capacity and cooling.

I agree, I don't think cooling was the problem either. This guy is a retired mechanical engineer who has both the ability and equipment to make almost anything and does some amazing things welding, fabrication, repairs, etc. But I don't know how he got the idea there was a cooling issue.

I'll find out more about the transmission and get back on when I have better information. If nothing else I'll try and report what the real issue turns out to have been.

Find out if it is an F-150, F-250, F-350 etc. and which engine is in front of it. Also what transmission lubricant he uses in it. I'm sure we are all curious.

I have never read anything about the 5 speed manual transmissions 'overheating'. Never.

There is no pan. There is no cooling issue. It is very uncommon to have problems with that transmission. Most last for hundreds of thousands of miles without issue.
Either really, really bad luck or maybe it's getting hugely overloaded - or just driven poorly ?

I find it hard to believe 4 transmissions were problematic.
