Not the usual 5.8 EGR delete thread
I am currently deployed to Afghanistan. While I'm out here I don't have much downtime, but when I do I am lurking boards.
I bought my 1995 Flareside 5.8 auto from another member here with 97,000 miles after my first deployment in 2011. Just before I took ownership he had to replace the passenger side exhaust gasket. In the process, the EGR tube was broken.
I should back up and say that the EGR vac line had been plugged with a golf tee for years at this point. The PO said that no matter how many times he replaced it, when the EGR was hooked up there would be a surging on acceleration from a dead stop.
They blocked off the EGR and hooked it back up. The surging returned. The PO plugged the line back up and that is how it sits in my garage. I looked at the RJM EGR Eliminator (can't find any posts where someone has used this on a 5.8). I know the PO attempted several times to repair/replace the EGR system but the surging always returned. He managed 19/21mpg highway without it hooked up. I'm getting tired of looking at the CEL and would like to solve this once and for all. Has anyone experienced this surging? Or has anyone has success with the eliminator kit on a 5.8L engine?
Thanks in advance folks.

Bear with me, I haven't driven the truck in months now.
1. The surging existed not long after the truck was new.
2. The cause was diagnosed to be EGR-related.
3. He tried replacing the EGR at least 3 times, each time the surging came back.
4. Then he unhooked the vac. line running to it with a golf tee and drove it like that for 15+ years.
5. When the tube finally broke, they blocked off the EGR out of curiosity and hooked it all back up.
6. Surging returned
7. Vac line now sits plugged. EGR is blocked but hooked to it's pigtail. Truck runs fine except the CEL.
8. I'd like to fix it so either it works properly, or the CEL is off.

Initially, only the vac. line was blocked. When the tube broke they put a small disc of metal where the valve screwed into the tube, if that makes sense. The truck runs just fine with this setup, with no surge or hesitation, but the CEL is on and kind of annoys me.

Only when the vac line is hooked up to the EGR does the surging/hesitation exist, so it has led everyone to believe it is related, is what I am saying here. This was the case before it was blocked and is still the case after, obviously.
Correlation does not equal causation but I'll be shocked if it is entirely unrelated.

We'd do it

I don't think it's blocked off right, might still be getting air past. Remove the EGR and make a flat piece of metal to fit between it and the intake. Keep the vacuums hooked up so the valve functions which makes the computer think it's working. I would fix it right though. Also check for codes.
