I will be changing my oil in the next few weeks, have 2,700KM's left lol. But I did pick up a Motorcraft filter and it is a bit bigger than the Quaker State filter. So it will probably take an extra quart. Making my regular 5 into 6.

there's no way a bigger filter will require a whole quart more!

More than likely, it's a buildup in the pan, causing it to show 5 as full.

Did an oil change on my wife's V-6 Taurus last spring not knowing that the 1 qt per cylinder rule no longer applies. ( I never got the memo.)

Checked the fluids the other day and it still reads almost a quart past the full mark on the dipstick.

I really should take a few minutes and drain off the excess.

Beats me ... back 30 yrs ago when i did my first oil change there always seemed to be a ratio of about a quart per cylinder. Maybe top it up after filling the filter.

After awhile you don't think about it anymore.

Probably the best thing is to "not assume". Go by what it says in the owner's manual and then verify that the level is right on the dipstick when you're finished.

You never know. The Motocraft looks and feels like it has a larger volume capacity compared to the Quaker State filter. And the possibility of some type of build up in the oil pan is probable, but my oil is quite clean when it comes out, but that isn't a great way to verify.

Are you sure it's got the right dip stick? If any of your buddies have the same engine in their truck you could compare them, or maybe pick up a new or junkyard dipstick.

there was a thread on this months ago, apparently alot of the dipsticks are wrong. build up in the oil pan is a possibility though.
