Default Fuel transfers from front tank to rear tank

i have a 1995 F150 with 5.0 with front and rear gas tanks. I have not used the rear tank in the 9 years I owned the truck. When I got the truck it only had 1/8 of a tank of gas in the rear tank. I always used the front tank. Last week I went tried to put gas in the rear tank only to find the rear tank full. Could gas be transferring from the front tank to the rear to cause it to be full. Have not noticed any overflow. Surprisingly, truck seems to be running fine. Any ideas on what would cause this. Thanks, Bill.

Yes it's a common problem - the tank that fills up will have a bad check valve in the fuel delivery module.

Double check that it really is full and it's not the filler neck vent line that is clogged and causing the pump to click off early...that's a common problem too.

If the rear tank hasn't been used in 9 years it also might not be a very good idea to use it without doing a bit of prep work. Any fuel that was in the tank for 9 years is definitely not something you want in your engine. and sitting for that long wouldn't be very good for the pump either.

each fuel pump on 95 f series has a check valve built in the fuel pump. Took mine apart it is a piston with a rubber valve. The failing pump is the tank that is filling with fuel.

unfortunately, the rear tank is more difficult to remove (unless you pull the bed). The imported pump assemblies are $120-$130, just replace the fuel pump module in tank that is filling up.

Why not?

Why did you suddenly decide to start using it?

Yes. Click these & read the captions:

The 2nd one is in a photo album that explains the whole fuel system, so read the PREVious/NEXT captions for more info. Cheap FDMs aren't worth what they cost. Spectra & Airtex are the worst - Bosch is only slightly better. MotorCraft is the most-expensive, but they last significantly longer than any other. Personally, I prefer to shop in the junkyards, and I rarely have to change them out. This & the NEXT few captions explain how to lift the bed to get to the tanks:

The ones after that show what old gas looks like.
