5.8 would be the best upgrade. Would bolt right up to your transmission and wouldn't require any wiring changes.

No offense, but that is a strange way of thinking. I'm just curious, how many miles on your truck?

There's a sticker on your driver's door post or you can crawl under and count the bolts on the tranny pan.
It's important to match the transmission and you have to be careful of the year as well.

Sometimes a fuel pump dying can feel like a worn out engine. Should be easy to check pressure and is quite a bit cheaper than an engine. My '96 was still running strong when I got rid of it, but had to put a fuel pump in the front tank at about 180k, by the time I changed it switching between tanks felt like two different engines. It ran fine on the dying pump, zero hesitations, just felt like about 50 less horses

i would like to chime in if that is ok. I have a 91’ and I may be facing an engine swap myself. I have a 5.0 with the E4OD. I do believe I am wanting to swap with a 5.8.

As as long as the replacement is within the the years I think 87-96 should it just be a straight swap?

Would I need to replace ECU?

Just make sure the truck you are pulling it from is not a mass air flow truck. As far as I know, MAF F150's with 5.8's didn't start getting made until 95, and they were still pretty rare-ish. Your computer should work, theoretically.
