Which engine
I'm about to buy my first ford f150 and I want to know what engine option I should look for. The straight 6 or the v8? What are the advantages and disadvantages to each engine?

The bigger the engine, the faster is sprays gas out the tailpipe. That's how they make more torque - by burning more gas. Smallblock V8s are not known for longevity, but that's mainly because they get abused & neglected so badly. The I6 is known for durability & longevity, even after tolerating abuse (mine has seen plenty, and has nearly a million miles). But it's not peppy, and with a heavy foot (like mine), it can still drain a tank quickly.
No one can give you relevant suggestions until YOU tell US exactly what you need & expect from this vehicle. An antique is NOT going to be as driver-friendly as a modern vehicle.

There are so many stories and so many opinions... not sure they help one make a decision. I would just look for the cleanest low mileage used truck I could find that met my needs with good service records and get it checked out... and I would consider all the major brands. Yikes... I said that?

Everything everyone has said is great advise, really depends on what you are looking to do, what you like, and what's available in your area.
I personally leaned towards the 5.0 V8 when looking for an OBS ford, my neighbor has one and I just love the sound of the V8. I got lucky and found a pretty decent one with minimal rust for sale in my price range and in my area so that helped.
I have zero experience with the straight 6 but have some with the 5.0 V8 now. I've found there to be a TON of information out there; here in this forum, Youtube, and the Heinz manual (which you should absolutely buy). Parts are surprisingly easy to get, online, at pick-n-pulls, and to my surprise (and the employees) they actually carry a lot of parts at my local Autozone. This is the first vehicle I've ever owned to work on and I think it has gone pretty well so far being a beginner; but just know one thing, no matter what you buy, these old vehicles are antiques and you should be prepared to do work on them yourself.
