E9TA Replacement Options, 1990 F150

I own a 1990 F150 XLT Lariat 4X4 and the previous owner went through the headache of converting the truck to a 5 speed. It currently has a E9TA transmission in it and wasn't taken care of properly or built properly. He forgot to put in the 2 rubber rings in the shifter itself so it had no gear guide and a crap ton of play in gear. From a mixture of being driven around like that and the transmission having no fluid from leaking (By previous owner not myself) the transmission whines like a straight cut gear tranny. I'm in the process of building a 351 Windsor block from blueprint engines with 400hp and I wanted to know if there were other transmission options available that would bolt right in. I do daily drive the truck and don't mind driving stick, I have owned other vehicles with stage 2 clutches so a more aggressive tranny or clutch would not bother me.

If you are going with a 400hp engine build, then the only real option for a manual transmission will be a small block ZF5, found only in F250/F350 behind 300 or 351 engines. The M5OD you have is a light duty truck transmission that was only put behind the 302 and 300 in the F150.

If you convert it back to auto, the best bet would be a good built C6 transmission, but since it does not have overdrive, you may want to look into the E4OD. Being it is a 1990, you would need to look into making sure there would not be any wiring issues with the E4OD.
