Question 96 F150 5.0, 2WD, E4OD Trans -- Alternatives?

Hi all,

I've run into some trouble sourcing a 1996 E4OD for my F150 (1996, 5.0, rear wheel drive) within a reasonable distance, from the local self-serve boneyards, and I was wondering if anyone knows the answers to a few questions:

Will a 1995 E4OD drop-in, without changing linkage, DT components, or making any big modifications?

Is the flex-plate, and TC the same between 1995, and 1996?

What, if anything would I need to change, or modify to use a 1995 transmission on my '96?
I know that the E4OD was used on small block F150s, and 250s, and E-series vans and in theory, F-350s, (but not the right pan length etc.), but I don't know if I can find them on SBV8 Broncos, Explorers, and such.

What is the full range of years, and models, from which can pull an E4OD, and expect it to hook up (ignoring wiring the connector and possibly the solenoids, , as I can do that work pretty fast), without mechanical modifications and without changing computer components/ODM stuff?

I asked local yards, but all they know is that a 1996 F150 E4OD can exist in F-series, and E-series '96 models; but I don't care about 'best performance'. I just need it to run, ove, and generally behave until I rebuild my own.

Notes:
I know that the 1996 is better, but I have time constraints and just need a compatible unit.

I'd also appreciate knowing if '93/94, or '97 E4ODs can be easily installed in a '96, if anyone knows.

Again, it's a RWD, not a 4x4: The 4x4s are everywhere, as are the bigger transmissions, but the 1996-specific RWD/TWD E4OD seems tough (at the moment).

I have that classic 'no forward gears, all neutral except reverse' problem and I need to drop in a running, if ****ty used tranny to get back in motion while I do a rebuild.

I'm not looking for a professional rebuilt unit, or anything close to that; and I'm not looking for a rebuilder to work on mine. I'd pay someone to shove another unit under my '96 and hook it up, but I can't fork out a fortune on this. (My '96 isn't even worth what I've already put into it.)

Note for AZ Locals: I won't do business with DVAP. Burnt once too often with those laughin', jokin', #@!*!. I will buy from other self-serve boneyards though, and/or from anyone local with a unit that runs that isn't already fully rebuilt (and thus, too pricy). Again, looking for working, not perfect.

Many thanks to all who respond.

The electrical is all you have to worry about. If the plugs are the same it will work.

Actually, I made a rather big error, as I assumed that the F150 has the E40D, as I was told it should; but when I crawled under to remove it, I found that it's a 4R70W!

Right, a 4R70W, on a F150 5.0L.

So, I now need to find an alternative for that... I can get one from a Mustang 4.6L, but IIRC, the bell-housing might not match, and I'm not sure about the tailshaft either.

Was anything commonly sold (other Ford models) that would have a 4R70W that I can just drop-in to an F150 with a 5.0L? I know the shift lever is slightly different on cars, but I can use parts off my unit if needed.

5.0L Explorers/Mountaineers and (assuming they have 2wd V8s) and 3.8L Mustangs came with a 4R70W that should bolt up. I hear that the 2004 Mustang 4R70W is the strongest one built.
