Default 96 f150 4x4 5.0 4r70w issues

Hey guys, 4r70w issues. From a stop, you pretty much have to redline it and let off to get it to shift into 2nd gear. At highway speeds (55-60) it floats in and out of OD. You can feel the converter lockup then after a bit it downshifts out of OD. And once you stop and put it into park, in goes into high idle. Now with that all being said, I checked the fluid. Fluid is where it's supposed to be. Doesn't smell burnt. Has a slight discoloration. I plan on changing fluid and filter. It's obd2. I put a scanner on it and no codes for trans. Only for egr. The OD light does not blink. What's your opinions? Thanks guys.

It could be something wrong with the tranny of course, but hopefully it's something else.
The speedometer reads the VSS on the rear diff, the rabs system, cruise control and things like that and sends a signal through to the main computer (PCM) which combines that info with signals from a bunch of the engine sensors -and even the brake pedal switch- and decides when to shift and how hard.
Any one of those sending a corrupted or false signal can mess everything up so it's best to make sure everything else is working properly before digging into the transmission itself.
I have talked to people who have spent big dollars on a rebuilt automatic and still having the problem - only to find a burnt resistor in the PCM or a faulty TPS or 02 sensor.
So if you have a code for anything fix that first. And then test and inspect everything you can test or inspect - before you mess with the transmission. Might save yourself a few bucks.

I've been racking my head with it. I haven't had the time to mess with it yet. I've got a new egr valve on the way. The truck has 200k on it. Ive been thinking it's electrical because I don't feel, hear or see anything that would suggest it's a mechanical problem. But it boggles me that it's not throwing any codes. And I didn't check it with a junk scanner either. All the symptoms point at various could be issues. But not the full faults that usually apply to individual parts. I was just seeing if anyone else had seen this issue before. But if not guess it's time to get the book and multi meter out. Haha
