'95 F150 5.0L fuel system woes
 

Hey all, new to the forum here, trying to get dad's truck straight for him.

I've been lurking over the last few days, read a lot of posts on fuel system troubles and am in the process of diagnosing dad's truck.

The truck in question is a 1995 F150 XLT, std cab, long bed, dual tanks, 5.0L EFI. The truck surges/falters under load. Rear pump hasn't worked since he owned the truck, even though the dealer he bought from replaced it for him. He's been driving off the front tank since he's owned it, approximately 8 years.

Fuel pressure is as follows: KOEO 38 psi, KOER (idle) 35, KOER (under load, driving) fluctuates from 30ish to 40ish. Pulling vacuum on the FPR reduces FP as expected. It takes a good ten minutes after shutoff for fuel pressure to drop a few PSI. I can't do a meaningful test with rear tank selected because that pump runs but puts out 0 psi regardless of conditions. I put fuel in both tanks to make sure I wasn't running a pump dry. Rear indicates about half tank, front is three quarters full.

I've been under the truck to look at the fuel lines and see no distribution valve. The lines from the two tanks go to tees, so I'm assuming there must be check valves in the hard lines on the pump hangers.

I can hear the pitch of the front pump change at idle. While driving there's no chance of hearing it because of engine, road, and wind noise. I'm about satisfied that the front in-tank pump is failing, but given the PITA factor of changing the in-tank pumps I'm considering changing out the FPR as it's quick, cheap, and easy. Not worthwhile/bad idea?

Is it possible to cross up the fuel lines on the rear tank? Just wondering because that rear pump hasn't worked once since being replaced, and I was thinking if it was hooked up wrong it would just be pumping into the return line, but then I'd imagine it would overfill the front tank and make a mess. Not seeing any sort of distribution module/valve makes me wonder where the check valves are and how it keeps from pumping from one tank and returning fuel to the other.

Pops is 81, still working, and stubborn, so I can't have him out of his truck during the week,meaning I've only got weekends to work on it. How should I proceed?

the back tank is the devil lol. no worries on the fuel lines that's right just a t on line for separation, I cut mine out because I dumped the front tank off, and yes on purpose. lol. cant mix up the connection lines as there 2 different sizes so one can only go to a particular fitting, a lot of problems stem from sending units , a fualty or bad connection in that plug can cause a lot of fuel tank related issues. check the pig tail (plug) on the sending unit check to see if they replaced the pig tail the may have not go a good crimp on those wires or may come loose. if the pump is working chances are when they replace the fuel pump the could have cracked the plastic hose that feeds from pump to the top of sending unit. next pul the sending unit apart and make sure if they just replaced the internal pump they may have forgot an o ring gasket or something dumb . good luck and pull the bed off make this easy on yourself and way easier to access both tanks at the same time

I had so many problems with my front and rear tanks as well. Took me a while to diagnose but my front pump finally was reading Empty all the time so decided to just replace the pump. So front worked for a year. Finally this year, I wanted to fix the rear. Bought pump and had someone install. He calls me and sends me pics to my phone. Rear pump was super rusty and so was inside the tank. Said the tank is just too rusty to use. While he's telling me this, I just went ahead and ordered $90 tank from Amazon. He got those both in and now I'm happy I have 2 new pumps (1 of the 1 year old) and a new rear tank.

If your rear hasn't been used in a while, could also be rusty in there. He also tried to run it without the rear pump so everything will be disassembled while waiting for the tank but it can't be, it needs to be all connected.

Yeah, I learned to this model years have funky pump/tank problems!

I got a 5000k HID kit from Kensun (60), new headlight housings off eBay ($80), 32" Phillips LED light bar from eBay (75), black paint for grille. Everything was really easy except the light bar behind the grille, all that is required is to notch the tower where the hood latch is, and trim the back of the grille to make 1/4 of room. Looks awesome and is like day time driving 👍👍👍👍

I installed chrome tow hooks on my 2010 XLT. The holes are in the frame. I've got a set to put on my 2 wheel drive 2014 Ecoboost Limited as well.
