The AOD will probably bolt up to the 351, but it wouldn't be recommended. From what I understand the AOD never came from the factory behind a 351. Ford must have figured the 351 had too much power for an AOD transmission.

If you was to try it you would need a different flexplate, something about the balance with the 302.

As 88xlt said, it is a bolt in swap. Any transmission that bolts to a 302 will bolt to a 351 and vice versa.

And also as 88xlt said, there is a reason Ford never but the AOD behind the 351. It's the same reason they never put the M5OD manual transmission behind the 351. Long term it just can't handle it.

That being said plenty of people have done both swaps and been successful. But they are usually quick to point out the immediate successes and not necessarily willing to come back in 1-2 years to admit defeat when their tranny blows up.

Good points here, I myself just completed this same swap minus my Transmission is an E4OD and even though its still shifting correctly and strong theres no way I will drive it without first getting the transmission rebuilt and upgraded to withstand the abuse of the larger motor torque band. Theres also a lot of other things to keep in mind while contemplating this kind of swap if your thinking of retaining the factory engine managment system

They put E4OD's behind the 351 - it is stronger than the AOD.

I have been contemplating this as well, but I am wanting to do a MAF swap to get rid of the speed density crud. What would be a good parts list for that?

The E4OD will stand up behind a PSTD 7.3L in an F550.

You won't notice a difference in the way an engine runs with SD vs. the same engine swapped to MAF. My SD crud has been working like new for ~860,000 miles. But if you're determined to do the swap, the only sensible parts list would be the same parts Ford used.
