1996 E4OD No shift 1 to 2 or any other.
Hello everyone.
Wanted to share my story in case it helps someone.
OK. 1996 F-150 4x4, 5.8, E4OD. The "RedFord". Bought the thing, running, more than 3 years ago. Lots of small things not right. Paid to much for the thing. But, it was running.
Water hoses leaking. Vacuum leaks. Intermittent heater not working (?). Tranny shifting funny. Odd idle problems. Brakes, sheesh. And several other things. I have fixed a lot of things, but every time I get something done a new problem comes to the front. This problem started a little slowly. It was hesitating to shift up. But for a while it would shift if I backed off the throttle sharply. I actually paid someone to rebuild the tranny. Didn't help at all. Well, it quit shifting up. It would shift to second if I put the gear selector into 2. OK.
So I used a code reader, my '96 has ODBII. Got 2 codes. P0118 and a different one I can't remember but had something to do the the water temp sending unit. I did replace the sending unit The 118 code is the throttle position sensor. I replaced it and it the tranny starting shifting. Just like it's supposed to.
So. I want to tell you. The E4od does not use vacuum at all apparently. I replaced several other parts that didn't have any effect at all. This was before the code reader. I replaced the tranny gear selector sensor, the PCM (cpu), cleaned the MAF. Chased vacuum problems "forever".
So, anyway. E4od would not shift up from 1 to to 2. It was giving signs of a problem, very slow to shift up.
I hope this helps someone.
