Default M5OD problems

1995 F-150 5.0 4x4. It has the M5OD 5 speed and ever since buying it with 123,000 miles the transmission has been a little "notchy" until recently.

When cold, the shift from 1st to 2nd is bearable. From 2nd to 3rd is where it gets bad, not only is it pretty notchy, but if shifted hard enough, going into 3rd has almost no resistance and it grinds pretty bad. The the rest of the shifts are O.K.

Now when I say resistance, I am talking about how on the other shifts you can feel the synchros spinning up to let it shift, but quite often it just falls into 3rd gear and grinds. This happens whether it is warmed up or not...

My question is... What can I replace through the top plate to remedy this problem? Do I need to replace the shift forks or the synchros?

You can easily check/replace the shift forks as they are attached to the top cover, except the 5-reverse one. You can look at the syncros but you have to pull the tranny to change them.

Thanks for the reply. 5 and Reverse are fine. It is just 2nd to 3rd that really sucks...
