spindle nut torque
Just picked up a 1995 f150 4x4 project. It was making some noise at speed and both front tires have a little slop so I'm doing wheel bearings. My back yard mechanic background has been with a 89 mustang so being that this is a 4x4 I'm assuming its different.
I have a chiltons manual ordered but wont be here until wed.. I googled it and there is all dif ways people do it based on manual locking hubs etc.. The truck has auto hubs with the 3 bolt cap. So does anyone know what the torque sequence is? Edit: I did take everything apart and replaced the bearings. But I only have 1 spindle nut that uses a Wheel Retainer Key to keep it from backing out. Everything I have found for torquing the nut was for the 2 nut system. So I'm just looking for what the oem torque for the nut is.. as in torque to 50lb.. back off 1/4 turn and then install the Wheel Retainer Key.. etc thanks Drew |
Ok figured I would post the procedure for the next guy. My Chiltons has it torque to 70ft/lb while rotating the hub back and forth. back it off 90 deg and re-torque to 15-20 ft/lbs

My rule of thumb (for what it's worth) - Really tight while turning the rotor. Back it off, snug it back up and lock it.
