Default 35's with a 302?

Looking at doing a 6 inch lift with 35 inch tires on a 1995 f150 standard cab 4x4 manual long bed. I really would like to do a 6 inch lift, it just looks a lot better to me. My question is, is this a bad idea? Even with re gearing is the 302 going to have trouble with 35 inch tires? What would be best to re gear to? Also, how about rough country vs bds? Is the added cost of the bds justifiable? Let me know your thoughts and feel free to share pics! Thanks

I'm about to go down this road myself - same exact truck only a '94. I decided to go with 4.10 gears because of the nature of the gear ratios in our transmission - it starts out in 1st with a 3.90:1 and ends in 5th with 0.80:1. Contrast that with the E4OD which starts out in 1st at 2.80:1 or so and ends with the overdrive in 0.70:1.

So for the manual tranny, the 4:10's seem to be the sweet spot because it doesn't turn your first gear into a granny gear, and it keeps your rpms down low enough at higher freeway speeds. With the auto I would probably have gone with 4:56 because you need the extra oomph getting off of the line, and then the overdrive will keep the rpms low on the highway.

The 302 will handle it but it could use some help - even just an exhaust and a good intake with a basic tune up will make it run much better.

There is a member in here who just installed his BDS long arm lift and loves it. If you are lifting it because you want to actually take it out into the forest and play, get a BDS or pro comp with the extended radius arms. If you just want it to look nice and ride well on the street, the rough country will do just fine.

Awesome thanks! Is there a ring and pinion set that will work with the stock carrier?

The rear stock carrier will work with any ring pinion you throw at it.

You need a new carrier for the front when moving to 3.92 or higher.
