low power
hello all, new here
recently I purchased a 92 f150 5 speed super cab long box 2x4 with an 8.8 rear end. I got the truck for $400(guy was going to take it to salvage due to a broken brake line). I have been driving it for about 6 months now and it runs great, only use it to go visit family every other weekend which is about 300 miles away, I have been getting about 16mpg so no complaints there. The problem that I have is I just bought a boat over this weekend, 19' fish and ski which is around that 3000lbs area. pulling a load like that seems to be a challenge for my engine, the suspension handles it very well but I can't seem to hold speed or even accelerate very well, put it to the floor to get 70 and hope I don't find any kind of hill lol I have been thinking about pulling the cat and muffler to help with flow out and k&N filter for flow in. also plan on giving it a little timing bump I have done a full tune up on it when I purchased it don't really want to spend a lot on it as I only paid 400 so any thoughts would be appreciated |
I don't know if you have the 4.9 or 5.0, but the exhaust switch would help it greatly regardless. If it has larger tires on it I'd consider grabbing a set of stock 235-75-15 tires. You probably have gears like 3.07. If you wanted to you could grab a rear from the jy to change to 3.55. You're on the right track, just keep it maintained!

Here's a writeup about the sixlitre tuneup, which is bumping the timing and getting a hotter spark for better performance:

What trans and rear gear ratio do you have? If you don't know just look at the sticker in the driver door jam and look up the axle and trans codes

He should have the m5r2
