Not trying to dog you but if you want fuel economy buy a Toyota Prius.
You have a truck, trucks are made for working. NOT for saving money.

if you put the 3.73 gears in your truck itll be much better offroad, but will hurt your gas mileage even more. see if you have vacuum leak. most common it in the intake pipes. since you have a MAF sensor, vacuum leaks can really hurt your trucks performance

If you gear your truck around the 35" tires, and the "power band" of your engine at highway speeds, you'll see better mileage. The reason being that the engine operates more efficiently using less fuel. The technical reasons deal with exhaust scavenging, intake resonance, and the cam durations.
After I regeared from 3.55s to 5.13s, my 88 5.0 Bronco with 35s was getting between 15 to 18 mpg turning 2200 rpm @ 65mph. I stayed with the stock 2 1/2 single exhaust (minus the cat), and the intake was all stock. All I really did was advance the timing to the limit (once in awhile it would ping when I was lugging it).

I really don't think going to 3.73 would hurt his MPG. Im not sure what his original tire size was, but I'm sure it was a hell of a lot smaller than 35!
If he started with a 3.31 on… say 30's, going up to 35's had dropped his effective ratio A LOT. Id say a re-gear to 3.73 or 4.10 is in order and would sure help his MPG!

3.73s would be a big step in the right direction, and its what most the people I know that don't have an overdrive trans run. Its also the lowest you can go without changing the front dif carrier. My setup was running an AOD trans with a .67 overdrive ratio, so that's why I was able to, and chose to go with the 5.13s.
What worked for me might not be right for the next person, but I encourage everyone to do their homework to get the results they really want.... I actually bought 4.10s to begin with.
