Okay, so I have a 1993 Ford F-150 5.0 V8. I started it up today and it idle fine, but after a minute and a half it died. I kept turning it on and I had to constantly give it gas to stay running. Does anyone know what that could be? I think it may be the Fuel Pump, but I don't want to buy one if that not it. Thanks.

 

Get a fuel pressure tester. May also be the throttle position sensor TPS.

 

Does the truck idle rough at all? Sounds like a similar problem that I had with my truck, but after after few tests it turned out to be my EGR valve, as well as my map sensor.

 

Yes it does run rough. But after the high idle at the start up, it shuts off.
I just pulled a few spark plugs and try smell like gas. Could that be an issue?

1. Replace Fuel Filter

2. PUMP OLD GAS FROM TANK. lOOK FOR BROWNISH COLOR WHICH MAY INDICATE RUST AND OR BAD GAS. iF GOOEY BROWN (LIKE MOLASSES) YOU MAY HAVE TO DROP TANK AND CLEAN. I HAD ONE CLEANED AT A RADIATOR SHOP , ONE HAD T O BE REPLACED, iF TWO TANK SYSTEM PUMP WILL BE IN REAR TANK, PUMP IS DIFFICULT TO CLEAN, BHT NOT TOO HARD TO REPLACE HOWEVER PUMP IS EXPENSIVE

wATER IN GAS WILL BE MILKEY APPEARENCE

And how long was it sitting unused be fore that? I need the full story, being a 1993, it has had plenty of time to collect moisture and rust the inside of the tank. As you have filled with fresh gas, that may be hidden from a visual check (by pumping sone out) but you can take the fuel filter and blow in it to see if rust or other stuff blows out.

If it has been sitting for extended time prior to most recent fill, old fuel would have turned to gummy stuff and would not be consumed by fresh gas, additives, etc. It may just loosend enough goo to gum up the fuel system.

The description of starts, runs a short time, and dies sounds like a fuel problem. I'm still betting on blockage of fuel system.

(I had to drain, drop & open tank on mine to find the rust and fouled pump. )

 

We filled the tank in November. And then filled it about a month ago. So it's had fresh gas put in it. It sat for 2-3 years before it became mine. When it become warm out we plan to change the fuel filter, and if necessary the fuel pump.
