F150 302 rebuild
 

Ok so I'm doing some maintenance on my 89 f150 4x4 with a 302 and aod

It has confirmed oil pressure so I'm gonna replace the oil pump and main bearings. Along with seals on the bottom end and rear main and probably just the valve cover gaskets. Aside from new coolant and oil obviously is there anything else anyone can suggest replacing while the bottom is opened up and the engine is out?

Also I have a gallon of amsoil multi vehicle atf. Would anyone recommend I NOT use it for my aod when I flush it while the motor is out. I bought it a year or so ago for another rig but never used it

Tranny rebuild is anywhere from 1500 to 2500 dollars. I wouldn't put anything in mine except the proper recommended fluid specifically for my trans. And the best I can buy.
Is it worth the risk just to get that old jug used up ?

To change the rear main seal in 1989, you will have to remove the transmission or slide it back. It is a one piece rear main, and the two piece will NOT work in place of the onepiece item. Just thought you should this before you get into it too deep. Don't forget to plastigauge your bearings. It would be bad to install new bearings and find that you have a major problem.

If you're going to replace the valve cover gaskets then buy another gasket for the upper manifold. it has to be removed to get the passenger side valve cover off.

While you're there you might as well put a new Motorcraft PCV valve in.

For the transmission get some Valvoline Dex/Merc in the Blue bottle, works great and regular old Dex/Merc is what the trans came with. Also, if you only want to pull the trans pan off just put a new filter in. Then get the Ford trans pan with the drain plug in it. When I did the trans filter on my truck I put that pan on. Then I filled it back up with fluid. After driving a week I drained the ATF and refilled again. I then did a drian and refill 3 more times every two weeks. This got the fluid nice and clean. I did it that way because I didn't want to drain the torque converter. Also, doing it that way did a flush on the converter rather than just a drain and refill.

The trans pan is Motorcraft #F8UZ-7A194-AA, you can get it from Tasca Parts

Need some help seeing as we are talking about rebuilds.
 

I have a 1991 F150 302CI 5.0L... There is a canister that sits next to the vacuum canister on the passenger side. One hose goes from the canister to the engine, and the other is completely broken off at the canister itself. Does anyone know what this canister is, and what it does? I know it's not the vacuum canister.:help:

That's the air muffler for the air pump. It draws air in there. 1 hose goes to the air pump and the other hose doesn't go anywhere.

That's one name for it. lol. It is your charcoal emission air canister. If you are in an area that requires full emission checks and testing, you will need to replace it. Almost any Ford, of your 90's vintage, will interchange, as long as it has the same approximate dimensions. I only say that, because a good IM tech, can spot the smaller replacement can, and might fail your vehicle. If you aren't in emissions areas, then you can get rid of it and go emissionless.

I think we're talking about 2 different things. He said it was beside the vacuum canister (not below the battery), so I would think air intake muffler for the air pump.
I guess a picture would help, but if the charcoal canister is up where the vacuum canister is, it shouldn't be.

Figured it out.
