Default Cam advice

I been wanting to add some power to my 302 Windsor. I wondering if they came stock with roller or flat tappets and what cams I should go with also, if I end up putting in a camshaft, would I need to get it tuned or would I need to upgrade any major components in my engine. I'm using a daily driven EFI 1989 F150 XL and I just want a noticeable horsepower gain nothing too crazy, also want a good sound from my engine. Any help or advice would be very great

Being an 89 yours wouldn't be a roller engine. I don't think they were rollers until 92 or 93. I'm not sure what came to suggest as I'm wondering the same thing for my 95

they didn't come with roller cams or lifters, but the engine blocks are drilled and tapped from the factory for roller equip.

Yeah if the block is ready to except a hyd roller cam. You should be able to find a spider hold down and bones on ebay fairly easy.. Buy new lifters though.. No tune should be necessary with a mild computer friendly cam.. Like a b303 or E303 Comp also makes some good computer friendly cams.. I've used them with no tuning required.. You'll also need to measure and buy new pushrods..

I called Comp Cams when I was figuring out what cam for my build. They were a great help. They have part #'s that aren't even listed online. Tell them what your looking for and see what they suggest.

I had a Comp Cam slid in my 5.0L during recent rebuild. Went by their advice and used the 31-000-8 Xtreme Enegry cam ground for the 302, with matching lifters, valve springs and timing gear set. basically it's what we used to call an "RV" performance cam.
