Default 5.8 Starting Issue

1990 F150 with 5.8L having issues starting. Have to turn key to "on" and let fuel pump run until it shuts off. Truck will start but not like it should, and the check engine light is on. Once you drive for a bit it will kick down and run fine and check engine light will go away. After is sits for an hour, the same issue is still there. Tried new fuel pump and still has the same issue. Anything else to try? waiting on a code reader also. Thanks.

My 1989 f150 w/ the 5.8 does the same thing but without the check engine light. I usually give it a pump of throttle while I'm starting it up

Just to ask the obvious but when you did the fuel pump did you also do the filter? Have you checked the pressure on the rail?
